Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix and is a common cause of acute abdominal pain. Prompt assessment is important because untreated appendicitis may progress to perforation, abscess or peritonitis. Treatment commonly involves laparoscopic appendicectomy, although selected patients may be suitable for other approaches after clinical and imaging assessment.
